Why You Get Cold on Repeat Dives (and How to Fix It)

Here is the pattern almost every diver knows: the first dive of the day feels fine, the second is a bit chillier, and by the third you are shivering before you even hit the water - even though the sea temperature has not changed at all. If you have ever wondered why you get cold on repeat dives, the water is rarely the main culprit. What gets you is everything that happens between dives.

Understanding that is the difference between a dive centre that loses half its group after two tanks and one where people happily do a third dive, or come back the next day.

It is not just the water - it is the surface interval

Your body loses heat in water roughly 20 to 25 times faster than in air of the same temperature. That is well known. What gets less attention is what happens when you come back up. You climb onto a boat in a wet wetsuit, the wind hits you, and evaporative cooling takes over - the same effect that makes you cold stepping out of a shower on a breezy day. A wet neoprene suit on an open boat deck is one of the coldest places you can be on a dive trip, colder than the water you just left.

That surface interval is supposed to let your body recover before the next dive. Instead, for a lot of divers, it is where the real heat loss happens. You start dive two already behind on core temperature, and dive three you are properly cold before you descend.

Heat loss is cumulative, not reset

Your body does not fully re-warm in a 45 or 60 minute surface interval, especially if you spent it shivering in the wind rather than actually warming up. Each dive stacks a bit more heat debt on top of the last one. This is why the same water temperature that felt comfortable on dive one can feel genuinely cold on dive three - your body is simply starting from a lower baseline each time.

Add in things that make it worse: a wetsuit that is slightly too loose and flushes cold water, standing around in the wind while kitting up, or skipping a hot drink between dives, and the pattern gets worse fast.

What actually fixes it

  • Stop losing heat on the surface. A wet neoprene suit does nothing to block wind-chill - it is cold and clingy the second you are out of the water.   • Warm drinks, not just warm suits. Simple, but it works, and it costs nothing.

A cold diver ends the day early, skips the afternoon dive, or does not book the second day.
