How to Stay Warm Scuba Diving (Without a Thick Wetsuit)

Every diver knows the feeling: you surface from a good dive, and instead of feeling relaxed you are shivering on the boat, waiting for the sun or a hot drink to bring you back. The instinct is to blame the wetsuit and buy a thicker one. That often makes things worse, not better. Here is what is actually going on, and what helps.

Why divers get cold in the first place

Water pulls heat away from your body around twenty times faster than air. Every dive is a slow drain on your core temperature, even in water that feels comfortable at the surface. On a second or third dive of the day, you start already a little depleted, so you get cold faster and stay cold longer.

The other part people forget is the surface interval. You come up wet, the wind hits you, and evaporative cooling takes over. A lot of divers get colder standing on a windy boat between dives than they do underwater.

The usual fixes, and their downsides

The default answer is "wear a thicker wetsuit." It works, up to a point, but a thicker wetsuit is heavier, stiffer and harder to move in. It is also just as cold and wet on that windy boat deck as a thinner one - neoprene does nothing for you once you are out of the water.

A drysuit solves the cold-water problem properly, but it is a bigger investment, needs its own training, and is more suit than most divers need for temperate or warm-water diving.

Hot drinks, extra towels and huddling out of the wind all help a little. They are damage control, not a fix.

Thermal layering actually solves it

The better approach is layering: a base layer for warmth, an exposure suit for protection, and something that blocks wind on the surface. This is standard practice in mountaineering and sailing, and it works just as well on a dive boat.

  • Pace your repeat dives. If you are genuinely cold, a longer surface interval and something warm to drink is worth more than pushing straight into the next dive.
